How much is a wheel bearing replacement?

It depends on the vehicle and whether the bearing is a bolt-in hub or a press-in bearing. I quote parts and labour for your car before any work. If you’re not sure where the noise comes from, start with a CA$70 mobile diagnostic.

A real job: Nissan Rogue rear hub

The photos on this page are from a real repair: a worn, rusted rear hub bearing on a Nissan Rogue, replaced on jack stands in a parking lot. The rusted old hub is next to the new one, still on its box.

When a shop is the better option

Press-in bearings sometimes need a hydraulic shop press. If your car uses that type and it can’t be done safely on site, I tell you before I book.

FAQ

Questions about wheel hub & bearing repair

Is it safe to drive with a bad wheel bearing?

For a short time it usually still drives, but a failing bearing can overheat and, in the worst case, let the wheel wobble. Have it checked soon.

Should both sides be replaced?

Not always. I replace the side that is worn. If the other side is also noisy or loose, I tell you.

Can you replace a wheel bearing in a parking lot?

Yes, on most vehicles with bolt-in hubs, as long as there is flat, safe ground to lift the car.
