How I diagnose a check engine light
- Read all codesStored, pending and permanent codes, plus freeze-frame data from when the light came on.
- Live dataSensor readings with the engine running: fuel trims, misfire counts, temperatures, voltages.
- Targeted testsChecks on the parts the code points to: coils, plugs, sensors, vacuum leaks, wiring.

When to call right away

Why not just clear the code?
Clearing a code turns the light off, but the fault is still there and the light will come back. A proper diagnosis saves you from buying parts that don’t fix the problem.
When a shop is the better option
Some faults inside the engine or transmission need a shop lift or special equipment. If the diagnosis points there, I tell you what I found so you can take it to the right place.

Questions about check engine light diagnosis
Is a steady check engine light urgent?
Usually not an emergency, but have it checked soon. A flashing light is more urgent: reduce driving and call.
Can a loose gas cap turn on the light?
Yes, an evaporative-system leak like a loose cap can. Tighten it; if the light stays on after a few drives, get it scanned.
Do you just read the code?
No. Reading the code is the first step. I test what it points to so you know the real cause.
